On Sunday, 5th August 2007, we took a stroll into Blackpool
and headed along the promenade to enjoy the long awaited sunshine.
It was lovely to see so many holidaymaker's enjoying themselves.
However, there was one massive blot on the landscape of this
idyllic scene.
All of the bins along the prom, from Central to North Pier
(see pictures), were overflowing with rubbish. There was rubbish
piled up along side them and on top. In this instance the holidaymaker's
are not the ones to be blamed, per se, for the mess, as they
had all attempted to use the bins provided.
Surely in a town that's main income is tourism they should
be emptying the bins more regularly. The cleansing department
should be geared up for ongoing bin emptying in popular tourist
spots such as the prom, and during good weather emptying should
surely be stepped up. It would only require one employee in
a 'muck cart' to drive up and down the prom to keep on top
of this filth.
Why spend a fortune on developing the prom when the whole
effect is ruined by mounds of rubbish, which in hot weather
(well, we live in hope!) soon begins to stink.
I'm not sure what the arrangements are, but shouldn't the
fast food outlets supplement the clean up operation, after
all there is ample evidence that Burger King, McDonalds, Harry
Ramsden, KFC, etc, and the likes, contribute to the mini-mountains
of muck in this town.
